SALINAS – Eight players moved onto the 22nd Annual CGA Senior Amateur Championship in November on Monday by qualifying at Salinas GCC. The leader of the pack was Kenneth Smokoska of Arroyo Grande, who fired the only under-par score of the day a 4-under-par 68. He kept a clean card in his effort making four birdies (Nos. 9, 12, 13 and 16) and 14 pars.
Finishing in second place with a score of even-par 72 was Frank Pieper of Carmel. Pieper was able to tally five birdies in his round, but unfortunately for him they were countered with five bogeys. Tied for third at 1-over-par 73 and earning spots were Christopher Blair of Nipomo and Ken Noonan of Pacific Grove. Both players had rounds which included two birdies and three bogeys.
A slight drop-off in scores were seen from there as tied for fifth place at 4-over-par 76 were Robert Miller, Steve Donnelly and Thomas O’Grady. Miller of Saratoga had the best start of three to his round birdieing two of his first five holes before fading with four bogeys and a double bogey. O’Grady of Los Altos had the most birdies of the three converting three on the day, but in turn the most mistakes making three bogeys and two double bogeys. Donnelly of Salinas played catch-up in his round taking a double bogey and three bogeys in his first nine holes before rallying off eight pars and a birdie over his final nine holes.
The final player to capture a spot was Tom Lyons of Pleasanton, who had to beat out Kevin Gaughan, Doug Tambara and Ray Kong in a sudden-death playoff as all players posted scores of 5-over-par 77. Tambara earned first alternate, while Kong earned second alternate.
The championship proper will take place November 4-6 at San Gabriel CC.
