PEBBLE BEACH – Qualifying for the 20th Net Amateur Championship took place Thursday at 10 different Northern California courses with 112 players advancing to next month’s championship.
Laguna Seca GR in Monterey held the largest qualifier of the day with 16 players advancing. There, John Moran lapped the rest of the qualifying field winning by a nine-stroke margin with a net 60 while the next nearest qualifiers finished with a net 69.
Three other golf courses allotted 15 spots apiece for the championship field: Castle Oaks GC in Ione, Haggin Oaks GC in Sacramento and Paradise Valley GC in Fairfield. At Castle Oaks GC, Russ Anders had a similar result to Moran at Laguna Seca GR as he won by a six-stroke margin, firing a net 61 with his closest competition finishing with a net 67. Craig Saftenberg finished in first at Haggin Oaks GC with a net 64, while second place finisher was Carl Springer with a net 66. No outright winner was determined at Paradise Valley GC as Larry Hoffman and Jim Manzi led all scores by each posting rounds of net 65.
Rooster Run GC in Petaluma and Shadow Lakes GC in Brentwood fielded the next largest qualifiers with 10 available spots each. Terry Kersey and Travis Early led the way at Rooster Run GC each firing rounds of net 64. Similarly, at Shadow Lakes GC a pair of players led all scores with a net 64: Mike Guidry and Jack Smith.
Allotting nine qualifying spots separately were Crystal Springs GC in Burlingame and Monarch Bay GC in San Leandro. One dominating low score was hard to come by at Crystal Springs GC as four players tied for medalist honors with a net 68. At Monarch Bay GC not as strong a sentiment could be said, yet it was still similar with the low score of net 67 being shared by two players, Rodney Kelman and Joseph Nelson.
Riverside of Fresno GC held the second smallest qualifier of the day with eight qualifying spots available. Leading the way there was Robert Garrison who fired a net 66, two shots better than Troy Takagi and Randy Pickens.
The smallest qualifier was at Bidwell Park GC in Chico, which delved out five qualifying spots. Wes Heryford fired a net 62 to lead the way, while second place finisher Jason Roberts finished with a net 65.
The 20th Annual NCGA Net Amateur Championship will take place October 14-15 at Poppy Ridge GC. All results are unofficial until scorecards have been verified by the NCGA staff.
