TURLOCK – Jeff Hoffman and Brian Koehler were the two players to advance from U.S. Mid-Amateur Qualifying on Monday at Turlock GCC. Hoffman of Folsom led the way with a 2-under-par 70, which included four birdies and two bogeys. The 51-year-old got to 3-under through 10 holes, converting birdies on Nos. 2, 6 and 10, before taking bogeys on Nos. 11 and 15 with a birdie sandwiched in between on No. 13.
Koehler of Sacramento tied for the next lowest score with Ronald Killmer of Bakersfield at even-par 72, beating him in a sudden-death playoff on the first playoff hole. Starting his round off No. 10 tee, the Sacramento resident made the turn at 1-under with birdies on Nos. 13 and 16 and a bogey on No. 14. Then on his back nine, the 36-year-old made three birdies (Nos. 2, 5 and 9), two bogeys (Nos. 1 and 6) and a double bogey (No. 7) for a 1-over-par 37.
Killmer earned first alternate, while second alternate went to Terry Foreman, respectively. Foreman of Antioch finished in a three-way tie for fourth place with Jason Pridmore of Ventura and Kevin Wolf of Lodi at 1-over-par 73. With none of the three players sticking around for a sudden-death playoff, Foreman earned second alternate through a scorecard playoff.
With their performances, Hoffman and Koehler qualify for the U.S. Mid-Amateur Championship at The Country Club in Birmingham, Ala., October 5-10.
