LIVERMORE – With the first half of the championship field qualifying on Wednesday at Poppy Ridge, the second half of the field qualified for the championship on Thursday. The biggest difference seen between the 15 teams that qualified on Thursday compared to the 15 on Wednesday were the higher qualifying scores. No team on Thursday had a sub-120 round at Poppy Ridge GC, while on Wednesday four teams bettered that mark among the three 18-hole setups.
The low round of the 42 teams at Thursday qualifying came from the Spondulick GC team. In a format which takes the two best net scores per hole of a four-man team, Spondulick GC recorded a score of 121, 23-under-par on the Chardonnay/Zinfandel setup. The team consisting of Russell Bettencourt, Russ Burch, John Irish and Shekhar Jain converted two net double eagles, five net eagles and seven net birdies in their bogey-free effort. Other teams to qualify from the Chardonnay/Zinfandel setup were Loons Nest GC, Rasta Cruz GC, Bdge GC and Capitol City GC. Loons Nest GC and Rasta Cruz GC each posted scores of 123, 21-under-par to tie for second, while Bdge GC and Capitol City GC tied for fourth at 125, 19-under-par.
The Zinfandel/Merlot setup was led by the Sacramento Chinese GC team at 122, 22-under-par. The four-man team featuring Glen Gingrich, Wei Mao, Tim Mar and Kenneth Yee were able to produce four net double eagles and 10 net birdies in a bogeyless round. Five shots behind them and tied for second at 127, 17-under-par were NAS GA and Agilent Technologies GC, while alone in fourth at 129, 15-under-par was the Dragons GC team. The final team to earn a spot in the Zinfandel/Merlot setup was Outabounds GC who beat out Intel Folsom GC and REGAL of San Francisco for the fifth spot as all three teams came in with a score of 130, 14-under-par.
San Lorenzo GC led the Merlot/Chardonnay setup with the highest low qualifying score over the two days, firing a 126, 18-under-par. The four-man team of Sam Crawford, Mike Oertel, Joel Reitz and Vince Salem teamed up for an eagle-heavy, bogey-free round, which included one net double eagle, seven net eagles and one net birdie. Electronic Systems GA finished alone in second place at 127, 17-under-par, while tied for third place at 128, 16-under-par were Half Moon Bay Katz and Rolmex GC. The final team to qualify beating out E-Club South Bay and Indo-American GA as all three teams finished with a score of 129, 15-under-par was E-Club San Francisco.
The 15 teams to qualify from Thursday will join the 15 that qualified Wednesday in the 31st Annual Associate Club Championship at Del Monte GC and Spyglass Hill GC on August 26-27.
