PEBBLE BEACH – Qualifying for the 20th Annual Associate Club Net Amateur Championship took place Thursday at nine different Northern California golf courses. Allotted spots at the unique qualifying sites ranged from seven to 15 available spots for next month’s championship.
The largest qualifying site at Shoreline GL had 15 spots available and was led by Kamlesh Ganatra, who posted a 7-under net 65. Chris Feetham finished second with a 6-under net 66, while John Michalski finished third at 5-under net 67. The final two players to qualify, Jeff Berney and Peter Chui, each fired an even-par net 72.
Poppy Ridge GC, which held two qualifiers among its 27 holes, had the second most allotted spots among its two setups as 14 were available at each. The low round came in the Zinfandel/Merlot setup as Robert Fernandes posted a 10-under net 62. Fernandes was four shots clear of his nearest competitor—James Bechtold at 6-under net 66—and 10 shots better than final qualifying players, Douglas Miller and Marianto Cuaresma at even-par net 72. Despite having the lower medalist score, the Chardonnay/Zinfandel setup proved to be tougher as the final two qualifying players, Arthur McNicoll and Andrew Klein, had to post a 2-under net 70 to earn their spot in the championship. The low score on the Chardonnay/Zinfandel setup was a 9-under net 63 by Nolan Harding.
Roddy Ranch GC had 12 players earn a spot in the championship, led by Dave Grahn with a 7-under net 65. In second place with a 5-under net 67 was Kevin O’Leary, while the final three players to qualify from Roddy Ranch GC finished with an even-par net 72.
Mare Island GC awarded 10 spots in its qualifier. Connie Vickroy led the way with a 5-under net 65, beating her nearest competition, Ron Sharek, by three strokes as he finished with a 2-under net 68. Six other players finished with a 1-over net 71, while the final two to qualify finished with a 2-over net 72.
Also allotting 10 spots for the championship was Turkey Creek GC. Medalist honors there went to Jay Caldeira firing a 6-under net 66. Three players tied for second place with a 4-under net 68, another three tied for fifth place at 3-under net 69, while the final three to qualify tied for eighth at 2-under net 70.
The smallest qualifiers of the day were held at Rancho Canada GC and Ridgemark GCC, respectively, as each course had seven available spots. At Rancho Canada GC Jon Russell and Ken Heinly were the only two players to share medalist honors at a qualifying site on Thursday as both fired a 2-under net 69. Of the remaining five players to qualify from Rancho Canada GC three fired rounds of 1-under net 70, while the final two finished with a net score of 1-over 72. At Ridgemark GCC Craig McGowen took first place with a net score of 7-under 65. Keith Hunter and Bruce Evans tied for second each with a 5-under net 67, while the final four qualifying players had net scores ranging from 68 to 70.
