PEBBLE BEACH – Thirty-six holes wasn’t enough to crown a 2013 champion.
The 31st Annual NCGA Associate Club Championship ended with the Pac Bell Golf Club of Sacto team reigning victorious after two holes of a sudden-death playoff.
The Pac Bell GC team, comprised of Mark Trentham, Steven Zweigle, Ronald Custodio and Jeremy Kopp, finished the first round at Del Monte GC in the middle of the pack with 126. The co-worker team stepped up their game for the final round.
“Our strategy was never to give up on any shots out there,” Zweigle said.
With five net eagles and two net birdies on their first nine holes in the final round, the team made the turn net 11-under-par.
On the back nine the team just needed a solid finish to take home the title.
They carded net birdies on Nos. 4 and 9 and an eagle on the par-4 sixth hole. One more net birdie would have given them the outright lead, but luckily their final round 14-under-par 130 was enough to secure their spot in the playoff against the Masters Big Valley Golf Club team. Both teams had finished the event at Spyglass Hill tied at 32-under-par 256 to head into the playoff.
The playoff began with both teams gunning for the title. Both finished with net pars on the relatively tame par-4 10th. The long and challenging 11th hole was the determining hole for the event as the Pac Bell GC team finished with a net birdie to win.
“This [win] is completely unexpected,” Trentham said with a smile on his face.
The Masters Big Valley GC team, comprised of Lee Coelho, Bill Cardoza, Frank Oliveira and Eric Jung, heads home with a the silver medal after putting up a good fight.
Finishing tied for third was the Caddy Club of Pebble Beach team and the BDGE GC team.
The 32nd Annual NCGA Associate Club Championship will take place August 25-26, 2014 at Del Monte GC and Spyglass Hill GC.

MONTEREY — The first round of the 31st Annual NCGA Associate Club Championship concluded with the Electronic System GC team leading the field by one stroke.
The Annual NCGA Associate Club Championship is a 36-hole event with a format that takes the two best net scores per hole from a four-man team.
Comprised of Tom McMurray, Eric Federspiel, Kevin Fong and Rick Grauman, the Electronic System GC team began the round strong with a net birdie on the first hole of Del Monte GC. From there, the team went on to make four net eagles in a row. The Electronic System GC seemed unstoppable making the turn at net 15-under par.
The back nine, however, wasn’t as smooth sailing for the team. With net pars on Nos. 10 and 14, and a net bogey on No. 17, the group was happy to have had such an outstanding front nine. The Electronic System GC team finished the round net 23-under-par 121 to hold the lead in the event by one.
Just behind the Electronic System GC team is the Big Masters Valley GC team who finished the first round net 22-under. Big Masters Valley is comprised of Lee Coelho, Bill Cardoza, Frank Oliveira and Eric Jung – who carded a total of eight net eagles in the first round.
Currently in third place after posting a first-round net 20-under-par is Capitol City GC.
The 31st Annual NCGA Associate Club Championship continues August 27 with the final round held at Spyglass Hill GC.
