SAN GERONIMO – Alex Franklin earned a three-shot victory in the 2013 Marin County Amateur at San Geronimo GC and did so through the merits of a spectacular final round. After opening with an even-par 72 in the first round and finding himself six shots back of the lead, Franklin fired a final round six-under-par 66 to finish with a 138 total.
Brandon Gama, who was in a similar position with Franklin after opening with a 72 of his own, fired a final round 69 to finish at 141, three-under-par for solo second place. Tied for third at 142, two-under-par were Esan Geroux and Johnny Partridge, finishing there in two dissimilar ways. Geroux opened with a 75 and closed with a 67, while Partridge had back-to-back rounds of 71. In a tie for fifth place at 143 were Matt Cohn, Peter Thomsen and Tommy Economou. Cohn had an opening round of 73 and a closing round of 70 with Thomsen doing the exacting opposite, while Economou opened with a 71 and closed with a 72. Tied for eighth at 144, even-par was Stephen Sparolini and first-round leader Robby Salomon. Sparolini had rounds of 73 and 71, while Salomon followed his opening round of 66 with a 78. Rounding out the top 10 was Tim Beranek with a 36-hole score of 145.
In the senior division Phil Yim won a four-player sudden-death playoff beating out Mike Parnow, Mark Miller and Ron Johnson. All four players came in with a score of 148, four-over-par with three of the four players scoring rounds of 73 and 75 (Yim, Miller and Johnson), while Parnow had matching rounds of 74. Because Yim is under the age of 55, Miller, Parnow and Johnson split first place points in the NCGA Senior Player of the Year race.
