El Macero CC
June 10-11, 2013
EL MACERO – The Junior Tour of Northern California (JTNC) kicked off its summer series at El Macero CC on Monday and Tuesday. The tournament welcomed four first-time 2013 winners and also the first hole-in-one of 2013 for the JTNC.
The boys championship flight had Hunter Rappleye claim a two-shot victory with a 36-hole score of 144. The Elk Grove resident, who opened with a four-over par 76 on Monday putting him in a tie for second, routed the field on Tuesday with a four-under par 68. Rappleye’s impressive play on Tuesday included six birdies and two bogeys, the exact opposite of what he did Monday when he made six bogeys and two birdies. Finishing second place with a score of two-over par 146 was Daniel Connolly of San Francisco. Connolly captured a four-stroke first round lead with an even-par 72 on Monday, but played nominally worse on Tuesday with a two-over par 74. Taking third place with a score of 151, seven-over par was Louie Chen. The Fremont resident started the final round tied for second with Rappleye after an opening round 76 and followed it with a final round 75. Ryan Johnson of St. Helena who finished in sixth place at 155 may not have placed, but he aced the 176-yard par-3 16th, the first hole-in-one in 2013 at a JTNC event.
In the girls championship flight, Jayshree Sarathy of Palo Alto went wire to wire for a five-stroke victory. After opening with a three-over par 75 to take a three-shot advantage, Sarathy improved on her play Tuesday with an even-par 72 to finish with a 147, three-over par total. Sarathy’s rounds were rather steady as she made 25 pars over 36 holes along with four birdies and seven bogeys. In second place was Rocklin’s Kelsey Ulep at 152, eight-over par. Ulep, who began the day in third place after an opening round of 79, moved up the leaderboard thanks to a final round 73. Camille Wagg, also of Rocklin, was the third place finisher with back-to-back rounds of 78 to finish with a 156 total.
Also producing a wire-to-wire winner was the boys first flight. Granite Bay’s Karim Richani earned a three-stroke victory by posting a 36-hole score of 152, eight-over par. Richani fired a first round 75 for a three-shot lead and then followed it with a 77, the same as his fellow-competitors and biggest competition. Grant Leppek of Rocklin finished as runner-up at 155 with rounds of 78 and 77, while Palo Alto’s Andy Zhou took third place with a score of 156, firing rounds of 79 and 77.
The girls first flight saw Victoria Hoff of Orinda enter the winner’s circle with a 36-hole score of 167, 23-over par. Hoff captured a one-stroke lead after Monday’s first round with an 83 and then closed with a final round of 84 on Tuesday. Second place and only two shots back at 169, 25-over par was Burlingame’s Jaime West. She similarly had steady rounds, posting an 85 and 84 to finish near the top of the leaderboard. Third place went to Nichole Schroeder of Rocklin with a score of 174, 30-over par, which included rounds of 89 and 85.
