Eagle Ridge GC
June 26-27, 2013
GILROY – Red numbers were absent in Summer Series III at Eagle Ridge GC in Gilroy as the course played tough for the 100 plus that teed it up on Wednesday and Thursday. Still, some solid golf was played was played among the four winners across the different flights.
In the boys championship flight, 2012 JTNC Boys Player of the Year, Jacob Solomon, entered the winner’s circle for the 2013 calendar year, firing a 36-hole score of even-par 144. Solomon’s solid play over the two days consisted of two rounds of even-par 72, with both being noticeably different. His first round had great symmetry making an eagle, which was countered by a double bogey, and converting two birdies, while also making two bogeys. In the final round, the Dublin resident relied a lot more on pars making 15 to go along with a double bogey and two birdies. Finishing in second place at 146, two-over-par was Blake Abercrombie of Rocklin. Abercrombie also showed consistency in his rounds firing back-to-back 73s. Tied for third place at 147 were Ashkan Hakim of San Ramon and Ryan Slater of Gilroy, with Hakim earning the third place medal determined through a scorecard playoff. Hakim had rounds of 72 and 75, while Slater carded the only under-par round in the entire tournament, firing a 71 in the first round followed by a 76 in the final round.
Fremont’s Aditya Kumar held on to his first round lead to win the boys first flight by a single stroke. Leading after an opening round of 72, Kumar posted a final round of 77 for a 149 total, good enough to edge out the competition. Coming in second place was Ryan Vaughn of San Jose at 150, six-over-par. Vaughn, who started the final round in a tie for third after an opening round 76, closed nicely with a two-over-par 74 on Thursday. Belinda Hu of San Ramon added a second victory in 2013 to her name, winning the girls championship flight by a six-stroke margin. With a bunched leaderboard after a tough first day for the girls championship flight, Hu broke away from the pack and followed her opening round of 81 with a one-over-par 73 to finish with a 154, 10-over-par total. Fremont’s Monica Chen took second place with a 160, 16-over-par total. She also improved nicely from her first round, opening with an 83 and closing with a 77. In third place at 161, 17-over-par was Woodland’s Sara Scarlett, putting together rounds of 84 and 77.
The girls first flight saw the largest margin of victory as Sophia Hui of Dublin took a 12-stroke margin of victory. Hui had a seven-shot lead after opening with a 77, and despite scoring five strokes worse in the final round with an 82, Hui still had the best score of her flight in the final round, to win going away with a 159, 15-over-par total. Second place went to Mira Yoo of Dublin finishing at 171 with rounds of 84 and 87. Earning third place was Lydia Tsai of Palo Alto at 173 with scores of 87 and 86.
