SALINAS – Qualifying for the 2013 U.S. Senior Open took place at Corral de Tierra CC on Monday with two players qualifying for next month’s championship. Hanford’s Martin Verdegaal and Gerry Simoni of Vista seized the two spots with scores of three-under-par and two-under-par, respectively.
Verdegaal, an amateur, earned medalist honors with his round of three-under-par 69. Starting off the No. 10 tee, the Hanford resident got off to a rocky start, taking a double-bogey on his very first hole. However, Verdegaal settled down quickly and made four birdies the remainder of the nine on Nos. 11, 12, 15 and 17 to turn at two-under. Again, Verdegaal opened his back nine poorly with a bogey on No. 1, but he closed his round strong with back-to-back birdies on Nos. 8 and 9 to post a three-under-par 69.
Simoni’s day was a lot more simple as the Vista resident started off the first tee and made no bogeys and two birdies on the day. Simoni made his first birdie on No. 3 and his second birdie on No. 8 for an opening-nine 34. Then on the back nine Simoni made nine consecutive pars for a level par-36.
Finishing one stroke back at one-under-par 71 and tied for third were Tommy Masters of Fresno and Don Thames of Rancho Murieta. Thames earned first alternate and Masters earned second alternate, respectively.
The 2013 U.S. Senior Open will take place July 11-14 at Omaha CC in Omaha, Neb.
