FRESNO – U.S. Junior Qualifying took place all day Monday at Copper River CC with two players earning spots for next month’s championship. At the conclusion of 36 holes the two players to survive the day and move on were Caleb Ramirez of Blythe and Victor Ponte of Agoura Hills.
Ramirez garnered medalist honors with a 36-hole score of 137, seven-under-par. He was one of three players to fire an opening round of four-under-par 68 in the morning, which included four birdies and no bogeys. In the afternoon Ramirez would end up finally taking some bogeys, making three, but upped his birdie count by converting six his second time around for a three-under-par 69.
Ponte finished alone in second and earned the second qualifying spot, thanks to a 36-hole total of 139 that included rounds of 68 and 71. Like Ramirez, Ponte also opened with a four-under-par 68, but did so in a much different fashion. Ponte’s first round included an eagle, five birdies, one bogey and a double-bogey. His afternoon round of one-under-par 71 had a lot more stability to it as he made four birdies and three bogeys.
Two players finished tied for third at 141, three-under-par: Jonah Texeira and Ryan Gronlund. After the first hole of a sudden-death playoff, Texeira of Woodland Hills earned first alternate, slotting Gronlund of Pleasanton in the second alternate spot, respectively.
The 2013 U.S. Junior Championship will take place in Northern California this summer at Martis Camp in Truckee, July 22-27.
