FRESNO – Tommy Masters captured medalist honors at U.S. Open Local Qualifying at Sunnyside CC Monday. Masters, a professional from Fresno, posted a round of six-under par 66 to earn one of five allotted spots to next month’s U.S. Open Sectional Qualifying. Masters’ round was chock full of birdies as he made nine on the day to go along with a bogey and double-bogey.
Finishing in a tie for second place were Sam Smith of Turlock and Bhavik Patel of Bakersfield at five-under par 67. Smith, a 22-year-old amateur had plenty of red on his scorecard, making seven birdies and an eagle on the day, but also took four bogeys. Patel, the 2011 California State Amateur champion who turned professional last year, nearly had a mistake-free round as he only took one bogey to go along with four birdies and an eagle.
Tying for fourth place and fortuitously avoiding a playoff were Thomas Richardson and John Lee at three-under par 69. Richardson, an amateur from Fresno, made four birdies and one bogey to go along with his 13 pars. Lee, an amateur from Norwalk, had a slightly more volatile round, making six birdies and three bogeys to go along with nine pars.
A playoff was needed to decide the alternate spots as three players finished at two-under par 70. Theodore Schrier of Atwater seized first alternate after the first playoff hole, while Thomas Lim of Moorpark earned second alternate.
U.S. Open Sectional Qualifying in California will take place June 3 at Big Canyon CC in Newport Beach.
