MONTEREY – Michael Brockington of Laguna Nigel earned medalist honors at CGA Amateur Championship Qualifying at Pasadera CC on Tuesday. Brockington fired a score of two-under par 69 to qualify for his second straight California State Amateur Championship. He started his round off poorly with a double-bogey on the par-5 10th, but quickly got things turned around making three consecutive birdies on Nos. 11, 12 and 13. Over his final 14 holes, Brockington would make one bogey (No. 15) and two birdies (No. 17 and 1).
Joe Huston of Monterey used course knowledge to his advantage as he fired a one-under par 70 on his home course to finish alone in second place. Huston’s round included six birdies and five bogeys. Alone in third place at even-par 71 was Daniel Semmler of Belmont. The 21-year-old Semmler, who started off No. 10, bogeyed Nos. 13 and 2, while birdieing Nos. 15 and 16. By himself in fourth place at one-over par 72 was JT Harper of Pebble Beach. Harper, who also started off No. 10, quickly got to three-over par with three bogeys after his first six holes, but he recovered nicely making four birdies and two bogeys over his final 12 holes.
The last three players to qualify were Johnny Castles, Stephen Griggs and Chris Whalen. All three players respectively posted a round of two-over par 73, perfectly rounding out the seven spots available. Castles of Cupertino, starting off No. 10, opened with birdies on Nos. 10 and 12 and then added four bogeys on Nos. 3, 4, 6 and 7. Sacramento resident, Griggs, also got off to a nice start before struggling on his back nine. He opened with birdies on Nos. 5, 7 and 8 to get to three-under par, but on the back nine he would make two bogeys, two double bogeys and a birdie. Whalen of San Jose had a roller coaster of a round making two double bogeys, two bogeys to go along with four birdies.
The two alternate spots went to two players tied for eighth at three-over par 74, Matthew Crawford (first) and William Ayres (second). The 102nd California Amateur Championship will take place June 17-22 at Monterey Peninsula CC in Pebble Beach.
