PEBBLE BEACH – Qualifying for the 22nd Annual NCGA Associate Club Four-Ball Net Championship took place at 10 different Northern California Courses on Wednesday with 56 teams advancing to next month’s championship.
The two largest qualifiers of the day were held at Deer Ridge GC in Brentwood and San Juan Oaks GC in Hollister, each allotting eight qualifying spots. Leading the way at Deer Ridge GC were two teams tied for first with a net score of 58: Manuel Leal and Chris Lang, and Simon Tao and Bryan Vogel. San Juan Oaks GC similarly had two teams tied atop the leaderboard with both teams coming in with a score of 60: Tom Norman and Randall Peterson, and Terry Won and Tranh Tran.
Ancil Hoffman GC in Carmichael and Santa Clara GTC in Santa Clara had the next largest qualifiers yielding seven qualifying spots each. The low net score produced at Ancil Hoffman GC was a 57 by Kevin McKibben and Tim Turney. The duo was closely followed by two teams who posted net 58s: Gregory Garcia and Rick Doerr, and Steve Hopson and Sung Oh. At Santa Clara GTC Brock Hinzmann and Kim Wells led the way with a net 59. They outdid runner-up finishers Steve DeSantis and David Glasson by a single stroke with a net 60.
Rancho Solano GC was the next biggest qualifier with six teams advancing to the championship. The Fairfield course also yielded the lowest score of the day, a net 56 by Kevin Oliveira and John Greitzer. The duo’s score was five shots better than their nearest competitors as two teams finished tied for second with a net 61.
Poppy Ridge GC held two qualifiers amongst its 27 holes with each field playing for five spots. On the Chardonnay/Zinfandel setup, three teams tied for first with a net score of 62: George Fowler and Marc Klemencic, Scott Gradin and Keith Jones, and Jeff and Bruce Umene. The Zinfandel/Merlot setup similarly produced a majority of its qualifying scores in the low 60s with the one exception coming from the team of Rob and Matthew Lankford who fired a net 58.
Castle Oaks GC in Ione had four available spots with the winners producing a net 57. The team of Frank Roa Jr. and Tony Souza beat their nearest competitors by five strokes as two teams qualified with a 62 and the fourth team qualified with a 63.
Indian Valley GC in Novato had three teams qualify with low honors going to Stephen Morimoto and Glenn Mar with a net 64. Two teams qualified with scores of net 66: Bryon Kataoka and Bill Burke, and Harry Pearson and Edmund Garcia.
The second smallest qualifier was at Riverbend GC in Madera, which offered only two qualifying spots. John Arteaga and Bill Horg earned the first one with a net score of 61, while Dalvinder and Baldeep Sanghera earned the second one with a net score of 62.
The smallest qualifier of the day was at Laguna Seca GR in Monterey, only having a one qualifying spot available for the eight teams competing. William Jones and John Bettencourt were the winners firing a net score of 64, while edging out runner-ups and first alternate Kent Parker and Harry Richards with a net 65.
The 22nd Annual NCGA Associate Club Four-Ball Net Championship will take place at Quail Lodge GC and Spyglass Hill GC on June 24-25. All results are unofficial until the championships and events staff have verified scorecards from each respective qualifier.
