Diablo Grande – The Legends Course
April 27-28, 2013
The Junior Tour of Northern California continued its 2013 season with a visit to Diablo Grande GC in Patterson, Calif. for Spring Series VI, marking the two-thirds point of the spring season as there are three events remaining in the next four weeks. The Legends Course at Diablo Grande played tough for competitors across all flights as only seven under par 18-hole rounds were produced.
The boys championship flight winner, Zach Smith of Pleasanton, was one of those players to fire an under par round, opening with a one-under 71. Going into the final round tied for the lead with three other golfers who matched his 71, Smith only needed a 73 to claim the championship flight, totaling a 36-hole score of 144, even-par. Justin Avery, one of the first round co-leaders, came up just short of forcing a playoff with Smith, finishing one stroke behind at 145, one-over par after a final round of 74. Taking third place was Nick Rogers at 146, firing back-to-back 73s. Rogers now has a claimed a first, second and third place medal after the first six events.
Surprising many by posting a lower 36-hole total than all players in all flights was Kyle Stewart of Fresno. Stewart won the boys first flight with a 36-hole score of 143, which was bolstered by a final round three-under par 69, a round that included five birdies and three bogeys. Amazingly, Stewart was in fourth place after a first round 74 and was three shots back of the first-round leader Evan Peterson, but with his impressive final round he won rather easily by a margin of six strokes. Tied for second place at 149 were Peterson of Clovis and Drake Mendenhall of Granite Bay. Peterson earned the second place medal via a scorecard playoff, following his first round 71 with a 78, while Mendenhall fired rounds of 73 and 76.
Similar to the boys championship flight the girls championship flight materialized a one-stroke victory for its Spring Series VI champion. Katrina Prendergast of Sparks, Nev. went wire to wire posting a 36-hole score of 149, five-over par beating runner-up Samantha Oliva of San Jose at 150, six-over par. Prendergast opened with an even-par 72 on Saturday to take a two-shot lead and finished with a 77 on Sunday. Oliva was Prendergast’s biggest competition as she was alone in second after an opening round of 74 and closed with a final round of 76. Two players tied for third place at 153, Kelsey Kawaguchi of Los Altos and Danville’s Ty Akabane, with Kawaguchi earning the third place medal via a scorecard playoff.
For the second consecutive week, Mira Yoo of Fremont claimed the girls first flight with a 36-hole score of 158. Yoo put together back-to-back rounds of 79, good enough to give her a three-shot victory. Finishing in tie for second were Neeve Chen of Roseville and Naomi Lee of Menlo Park at 161. Chen, who earned the second place medal via a scorecard playoff, had rounds of 81 and 80 for a 161. Lee, who took home the third place medal, actually held the first round lead opening with a 77 before slipping down the leaderboard with a final round 84.
