STEVINSON – Qualifying for the 102nd Annual CGA Amateur Championship kicked off Monday at Stevinson Ranch GC. The small qualifier of only 21 players allotted two spots for the championship field, which were snatched up by Patrick Grimes of Palo Alto and Chico’s Tyler Collier.
Grimes finished with the low score of the day a one-over par 73, which included two bogeys and one birdie. After taking pars on the first six holes at Stevinson Ranch GC, Grimes bogeyed the par-5 seventh hole and the par-4 ninth hole to go out with 38. He quickly recovered though by birdieing the par-4 10th and would go on to make eight straight pars to come in with a 35. Collier qualified with a score of two-over par 74, but unlike the stability of Grimes’ round the Chico resident had a volatile one. He opened with a 34 on the front nine that include four birdies (Nos. 2, 5, 6 and 8) and two bogeys (Nos. 3 and 7). After converting a number of birdies on the front, his back nine 40 didn’t produce any birdies. Instead, he relinquished some strokes by making bogeys on Nos. 13 and 16, and a double-bogey on the par-5 18th. Despite his troubles, Collier’s score was good enough to qualify rather comfortably.
Earning the first alternate spot and taking third place was Cody Blick of Danville, who finished with a four-over par 76. Tying for fourth place, but taking the second alternate spot via a scorecard playoff is Christian Sanders of Bakersfield. Sanders tied with Amay Poria of San Jose at five-over par 77.
The next scheduled qualifiers are on April 29 at Fountain Grove GAC and The Olympic Club – Ocean Course. The 102nd Annual CGA Amateur Championship will take place June 17-22 at Monterey Peninsula CC in Pebble Beach, Calif.
