SAN FRANCISCO – It took 39 holes, but No. 1 overall seed Andrew Biggadike survived the opening weekend of match play at the San Francisco City Championship. Biggadike’s opening match on Saturday against No. 32 seed Ryan Gronlund was a doozie, lasting 23 holes. Gronlund got up early taking holding a 1-up lead after seven holes and increasing that lead to 2-up after 11 holes, however, Biggadike made a late charge winning the 16th and 18th holes to square the match and force extra holes. From there, the two competitors replayed the 18th hole five times, until Biggadike sent Gronlund home packing.
Sunday’s round of 16 match didn’t prove to be nearly as much trouble for Biggadike beating his opponent MJ Morin (No. 16 seed) in 16 holes, 4 and 2. Also surviving the weekend were Jimmy Castles (No. 18 seed), Alex Franklin (No. 3 seed), Justin Suh (No. 6 seed), William Brueckner (No. 7), Nick Ushijima (No. 9 seed), Nicholas Rogers (No. 28 seed) and Isaiah Salinda (No. 29 seed).
The San Francisco City Championship will wrap up next weekend with quarterfinal and semifinal rounds taking place on Saturday March 9, and the finals taking place Sunday March 10.
