PEBBLE BEACH – More golfers than ever before qualified for the NCGA’s Public Links Net Championship on Thursday, with 112 players garnering spots over the usual 75-80 spots due to an off-season change for this year’s net championship. (In late 2012, it was decided that the Public Links Championship would divide the scratch and net fields allocating 120 spots for each championship and net fields.)
The first players to qualify for the championship and the smallest qualifying field were players at the Riverside of Fresno GC. Jon Swift led the way there firing a net score of 67, with Manuel Herrera, Thomas Casanova, Bruce Evans and Charles Richardson among the other qualifiers.
At Ridgemark GCC in Hollister, 13 players qualified for next month’s championship with Clint Jones leading the way with a net score of 64. James Gordon was the last player to qualify with a net score of 70.
Poppy Ridge GC in Livermore utilized all 27 holes hosting two fields and awarding 10 spots to each group. The low score on the Chardonnay/Zinfandel nines was shot by Rodolfo Paez, a net 63, while the low score on the Zinfandel/Merlot setup was shot by Paul Whitaker, a net 64. The Chardonnay/Zinfandel nines needed a scorecard playoff to award the final spots as four players posted net 69s with only three spots available. Thanh Tran, Joel Tyrus and Christopher Snyder each captured those spots, while Hans Schiesser earned first alternate respectively. Similarly, in the Zinfandel/Merlot setup several players fired a net score of net 71, but only one player advanced via scorecard playoff, John Johnson.
Paradise Valley hosted one of the largest qualifying fields as 16 spots were up for grabs. Sandy Boyd won with a net score of 64, three strokes better than the nearest competitor. William Coffelt and Leroy Gullette were the last to garner qualifying spots, each respectively finishing with a net score of 70. Also, coming in with a net 70 and earning first and second alternate spots were Paul Layrac and Tom Osipowich.
Monterey’s Laguna Seca GR was one of the only qualifiers that had co-medalists as three players, Joe Smith, Mitch Ignaitis and William Pollard, finished with a net score of 67. It was also unique in the sense that over par net scores qualified for the championship as three players shot 73 or above to qualify. Manny Castillo posted a net 73, while Stuart Clark and Frank Jarman carded a net 74.
Deer Ridge GC in Brentwood saw the lowest score of any qualifier on Thursday as Chuck Stephenson fired a net 62. Fifteen others qualified at Deer Ridge with 67 being the backend number to qualify. Despite stellar rounds of 68, Naresh Dhadal and Bill Bacigalupi are on the outside looking in, earning first and second alternate spots, respectively.
Sacramento area courses, Mather GC and Haggin Oaks GC, hosted two of the largest qualifiers on Thursday with 16 players from each course earning spots. Brian Herman led the way at Haggin Oaks GC with a net 65, while Ross Nelson fired a net 63 at Mather GC. Both courses required a 70 or better and a scorecard playoff in order to qualify for next month’s championship.
All results have been verified by the NCGA Championships and Events staff. The NCGA Public Links Net Championship will take place April 29-30 at Spyglass Hill GC and Bayonet GC.
