SAN FRANCISCO – No. 1 seed Jim Williams endured a grueling 20-hole quarterfinal match against three-time NCGA Senior Player of the Year, Mark Miller to advance to the semifinals of the San Francisco City Senior Championship. On the other side of the bracket Gary Vanier, the No. 2 seed, didn’t have nearly as much trouble in his quarterfinal match, winning easily 7 and 5 over Mike Wiechers. Vanier will face Ken Noonan (No. 11 seed) in the semifinal round after he advanced beating Robert Goodwin (No. 19 seed) 1 up. Williams will square off against Bob Rowland (No. 5 seed), who won his quarterfinal match over Herb Jensen by default.
In the round of 16, three of the eight matches went extra holes: Goodwin beat Dan Bieber (No. 3 seed) 20 holes, Rowland beat Eric Smith (No. 20 seed) in 20 holes, and Miller beat Greg O’Malley (No. 8 seed) in 19 holes. Top seeds, Williams and Vanier had competitive matches that went 18 and 17 holes, while the other three matches went 13, 15 and 16 holes, respectively.
