SAN FRANCISCO – The round of 32 of the SF City Senior Championship completed on Thursday afternoon at TPC Harding Park, with 16 players advancing to the round of 16 scheduled for February 27. The No. 1 seed Jim Williams and No. 2 seed of the championship Gary Vanier, both squeaked by in their respective matches beating their opponents 1 up. The third seed Dan Bieber had the most decisive match of the day, winning by a margin of 5 and 4. Players seeded between four and six all advanced—Herb Jensen, Bob Rowland and Frank Pieper—as well as the eighth seed Greg O’Malley. The only upset among the top eight seeds and unquestionably the biggest upset of the day came in the No. 7 vs. No. 26 seed matchup. In that match, two-time NCGA Senior Player of the Year, Jim Knoll lost to Frank Wiechers in 20 holes.
Players seeded nine through 16 weren’t as successful in their matches as only two of the favored seeds advanced – Ken Noonan (No. 11) and Tom O’Grady (No. 13). The six players to pull off upsets were Mark Miller (No. 24), Terry Leach (No. 23), Eric Smith (No. 21), Robert Goodwin (No. 19), Joe Zanassi (No. 18) and Mike Parnow (No. 17).
The round of 16 will take place at TPC Harding Park on February 27 with the quarterfinals taking place on February 28.
