SAN JOSE – El Macero’s Tyler Raber claimed a five-stroke victory in the first point event of 2013. The 22-year-old senior at UC-Davis fired a 36-hole total of 140, four-under par at Coyote Creek to be crowned amateurgolf.com’s Silicon Valley Amateur champion. Raber, who started the final round in a tie with San Jose’s Shotaro Ban after a two-under 70 on Saturday, matched his score again on Sunday to cruise to a victory.
Despite his struggles in Sunday’s final round with a 75, Ban still finished second with a 145 total. In third place was Mac Marr of Moraga, posting a 147 with rounds of 75 and 72. Grabbing fourth place was Corey Shaun of Encinitas at 148, with rounds of 72 and 76 to his credit. Tied for fifth at 149 were Steven Kearney of Carlsbad and Dylan Wu of Medford, Ore.
In the senior division of the event Dan Bieber of Alamo also won going away, claiming a seven-stroke victory. Bieber fired a one-under 71 in the first round followed by a four-over 76 to finish at 147. Walnut Creek’s Ron Johnson and Mark Miller of Antioch finished tied for second at 154. Johnson put together rounds of 72 and 82, while Miller fired a 73 in the first round and 81 in the second round. Rounding out the top five was Novato’s Mike Parnow at 156 and Neil Duffy of Santa Cruz at 158.
