PEBBLE BEACH – Not much change occurred from Friday to Saturday in Mixed Team II besides the venue as two of three flight leaders held serve winning their flights.
In the president flight, featuring teams with handicaps between 0-11, Kris and Mike Handsaker had just enough to win. Holding a three-stroke lead going into Saturday’s final round the Handsakers followed an impressive net 65 at Del Monte GC with a three-under net 69 at Poppy Hills GC giving them a 134 total to win by a single stroke. The duo’s solid play was enough to hold off a surging Matthew and Joanna Webb, who fired a seven-under par net 65 to finish one-shot back at 135. The Webbs started the day in a tie for sixth, but easily had the best round in the president flight to earn runner-up honors. Coming in at third place were Diana Tan and David Townsend at 137, seven-under par. Tan and Townsend were the only team besides the Handsakers to fire two rounds in the 60s, following Friday’s 69 with a 68 on Saturday.
The one flight to not see the first round leader win was the director flight, which consists of teams with handicaps between 12 and 17. In fact, despite starting Saturday’s final round before the secretary flight, the director flight was the last flight to finish as a sudden-death playoff decided the winner. The teams of Jerry and Lynda Toenyes, and Rick Lippincott and Maria Guarienti finished 36 holes tied at nine-under par, net 135. The Toenyes looked to be riding a wave of momentum going into the sudden-death playoff as the duo had just fired a nine-under par net 63. However, Lippincott and Guarienti, who had rounds of 68 and 67 to finish at 135, prevailed on the second playoff hole. Taking third place in the director flight were Carlos and Sandra Munio, who finished at 138, after rounds of 67 and 71. Just finishing out of the medals and alone in fourth at 139 were first round leaders Fred and Cathy Jaicks, who followed their 66 with a 73.
In the secretary flight, featuring teams with handicaps of 18 and above, Daniel Wu and Janice Yoshimoto ran away with a victory firing an impressive 36-hole total of 126. The first round leaders couldn’t quite match their first round net 61, but still played lights out firing a final round net 65. Finishing in second place nine strokes back were the team of Phillip Pagoria and Leslie Voegtly at 135. The tandem’s total was earned by two solid rounds in the 60s, following Friday’s 66 with a 69 on Saturday. Rounding out the top three was the team of Cesar and Julie Lopez at 136. The Lopezes had started the day only two shots behind Wu and Yoshimoto, but they followed their first round 63 with a 73.

MONTEREY – After the first round of the NCGA Mixed Team Championship II at Del Monte GC, the three different flights each have outright leaders, going into tomorrow’s final round. (The championship is a Chapman Stroke Play format, where a male and female partner each hit separate tee shots and then switch balls for their second shots, before taking the better of those two shots, finishing the hole by alternating shots with the agreed upon ball.)
In the president flight, featuring teams with handicaps between 0-11, Kris and Mike Handsaker lead after having fired a net score of seven-under par 65. The Handsakers have a three-shot advantage over their nearest competitors, Ron and Aimee Gordon, and Frank Pieper and Marianne Towersey, who both finished Friday with a 68 tied for second. Coming in right behind them in a tie for fourth place at three-under par (69) are the teams of Eric and Judy Boyce, and Matthew and Joanna Webb.
Fred and Kathy Jaicks lead the director flight—consisting of teams with handicaps from 12 to 17—after posting a six-under net 66. They are closely followed by the team of Carlos and Sandra Munio, who find themselves alone in second after a five-under net 67. In a tie for third place are Terry and Linda Wilson, and Rick Lipincott and Maria Guarienti at four-under par net 68. Four teams are tied for fifth place at three-under par net 69.
The secretary flight, featuring teams with handicaps of 18 and above, saw the lowest net score of the day as Daniel Wu and Janice Yoshimoto fired an 11-under par net 61. Nearly equally impressive and sitting only two shots back alone in second are Cesar and Julie Lopez, who shot a nine-under par net 63. Third, fourth and fifth place are all also held exclusively: Phillip Pagoria and Leslie Voegtly are in third at six-under par net 66, Dave and Judy Sanchez in fourth at five-under net 67, and Richard and Judy Costes in fifth at four-under (68).
Tomorrow’s final round will move over to Poppy Hills GC, with play beginning at 8:00 a.m.
