MONTEREY – Great weather and benign conditions at Del Monte GC allowed the amount of under-par scores to more than triple for the final round of Mixed Team I, which in turn provided some competitive finishes.
In the president flight, featuring teams with handicaps between 0-11, Kathryn and Bill Murphy had a seemingly safe five-shot lead going into the day, but on Saturday the duo needed nearly every stroke of that, holding on to win by only two shots. The Murphys weren’t as efficient in the first round when they fired a 66, but still a solid two-under par net 70 was enough for a 136 total and victory. Arlene and Paul Yost, who sat in second going into the day, tried to muster a comeback to overtake the Murphys, and despite a final round five-under net 67, the Yosts came up short at 138. Finishing in a distant third at 144, even-par was the team of Bob Rowland and Sandra Woodruff. The duo showed consistency over the two days firing back-to-back 72s.
The director flight, which features teams with handicaps between 12 and 17, first round leaders Kurt and Josie Garcia were caught by Dewey and Pat Bankston forcing a sudden-death playoff. The Bankstons, who started the day four strokes back of the Garcias and alone in second place, kept their momentum going in the sudden-death playoff as they came away victorious after the fourth playoff hole. Both the Bankstons and Garcias finished at a 140 aggregate with each team scoring a round of 68 and 72, but doing so on opposite days. Taking third place were Dan and Vickie Bohannon, finishing at 142 after rounds of 73 and 69.
First round leaders Young and Connie Kim won the secretary flight—teams with handicaps of 18 and above—as the duo bettered its first round 69 with a 68 to finish at 137. The Kims finished four strokes better than their nearest competitors Judy Schroder and Robert Adra at 141. Schroder and Adra followed a first round 71 with a round of 70 on Saturday. Earning third place with the low score of the day across the three flights were Kelly and Belinda Kindle. The Kindles struggled mightily in the first round posting a net 79, but on Saturday they were a completely different team firing a net 64, giving them a two-day total of 143.
Also occurring in the secretary flight was a hole-in-one by participant Sarah Grantano. Although Grantano finished in eighth place with her partner, Anthony Grantano, Sarah will always remember acing the 12th hole at Del Monte with a 6-iron.

PEBBLE BEACH – After the first round of the NCGA Mixed Team Championship I at Poppy Hills GC, under par scores were hard to come by among the 44 teams that teed it up. In total, only five teams finished with an under par score Friday. (The championship is a Chapman Stroke Play format, where a male and female partner each hit separate tee shots and then switch balls for their second shots, before taking the better of those two shots, finishing the hole by alternating shots with the agreed upon ball.)
In the president flight, featuring teams with handicaps between 0-11, only two teams found red numbers, led by the team of Kathryn and Bill Murphy. The Murphys’ six-under par round of net 66 was impressive enough to take a five-stroke advantage over their nearest competitors Frank and Arlene Yost at one-under net 71. In third are the duo of Bob Rowland and Sandra Woodruff at even-par net 72, while fourth place has three teams tied at three-over 75.
Kurt and Josie Garcia lead the director flight—consisting of teams with handicaps from 12 to 17—after posting a four-under par net 68. The Garcias were the only team in the director flight to find red numbers as Dewey and Pat Bankson hold the second position with an even-par net 72. Three teams are tied for third at one-over par net 73: Mike and Jamie Caballes, Mark and Linda Klemczak, and Dan and Vickie Bohannon.
The secretary flight featuring teams with handicaps of 18 and above—usually fertile ground for some low scores—were surprisingly lacking any low numbers. The leaders after the first round are Young and Connie Kim, who fired a three-under par net 69. In solo second is the team of Judy Schroder and Robert Adra at one-under par net 71. Third, fourth and fifth place are also all held exclusively: Jay and Carol Berry sit in third place at two-over par net 74, Anthony and Sarah Grantano are in fourth place at four-over par net 76 and Artie Schleifer and Joyce Glatt round out the top five at six-over par net 78.
Tomorrow’s final round will move over to Del Monte GC with play beginning at 8:00 a.m.
