PEBBLE BEACH – Whintey Oaks GC finally broke through to win its first ever Team Match Championship on Saturday at Poppy Hills GC. Whitney Oaks had made it to the Final Four three of the past six years, but it had never advanced to the Saturday championship match, until this year. Whitney Oaks burst through that bubble by Corral de Tierra 27-9 on Friday, before holding off StoneTree GC 20-16 in Saturday’s final.
“This group has been playing with each other for the past 10 or 12 years, so it’s nice to finally see it come to fruition this year,” said Whitney Oaks captain Gary White.
As early matches began filtering in on Saturday, it looked like StoneTree was on its way to the winner’s circle — grabbing an 11-7 lead after the first three matches. However, Whitney Oaks closed out the anchor match early, earning four of the six available points to cut StoneTree’s lead to 13-11.
Each team earned three points in the fourth match, meaning it all came down to the fifth match, which featured Whitney Oaks’ Fred Huston and Greg Larson. Huston had already secured his two points, and as a duo, the two had already secured two full four-ball points, giving their team 18 points and guaranteeing a tie. With Larson’s singles match against StoneTree’s Dante Carpinito coming to the 18th hole all square, Larson came through in the clutch. Lying two in the fairway, Larson hit his approach on the par-5 18th to four feet and would go on to make the birdie putt, securing two more points for the 20-16 margin of victory.
“We had some outstanding performances by Greg Larson, Spencer Page [and] … Kyle Gilmore,” said White. “Those guys had it figured out.”
As exciting as the championship match turned out, the third place match between San Jose CC and Corral de Tierra CC was arguably even more thrilling, as it came down to the final putt. With both teams tied 15-15 after the first five matches, the final pairing split the singles matches and had a four-ball match, which went to 18th hole. That’s when San Jose’s Chris Arata sunk a birdie putt on the par-5 18th to avoid an 18-18 tie, and instead give San Jose CC a 19-17 victory.
Next year with Poppy Hills under renovation, the championship will be held at Silverado Resort in Napa.

PEBBLE BEACH – Friday at Poppy Hills GC, the Team Match finals of the Thursday League and Saturday League took place, with Whitney Oaks GC and StoneTree GC victorious. The two teams will now face each other Saturday for the overall title, while the losers of today’s matches, Corral de Tierra CC and San Jose CC, will square off in the consolation match.
The Thursday League participants were the first to tee off Friday, and the Whitney Oaks team won in dominating fashion, beating Corral de Tierra 27-9. The format involves two players from each side participating in individual and four-ball matches concurrently, getting two points for a win and one point for a halve. The standouts of the Whitney Oaks team were the duos of Chirs Carolan and Spencer Page, Ed McGreehan and Fred Huston, and Ben Menold and Terry Siler, all of whom swept their matches, obtaining a full six points. The Whitney Oaks’ tandems of Pat McDonald and Kyle Gillmore, and Chuck Roberts and Greg Larson also contributed nicely, earning four and five points, respectively. The only bright spot for Corral de Tierra were players Chris Thom and Marc Bordonaro, accruing a full six points.
The Saturday League final between San Jose and StoneTree provided a much more spirited matchup as StoneTree came away victorious 21-15. After San Jose took an early 8-4 lead by winning four points in its first two matches, StoneTree countered with eight points of its own in the next two matches to notch the score at 12-12. Then in the fifth match, StoneTree bettered its position when the duo of Jeff Campbell and Dante Carpinito earned five points to put the score at 17-13. Only needing to win one match to advance, StoneTree did so and then some, taking four points in the final pairing.
The third-place matches between Corral de Tierra and San Jose will go off first Saturday beginning at 7:30 a.m., while the championship match between Whitney Oaks and Stone Tree will begin at 8:30 a.m. with the last group teeing off at 9:20 a.m.
