Haggin Oaks GC—MacKenzie
September 1-3, 2012
SACRAMENTO – Brandon Hagy, hot off his U.S. Amateur semifinal appearance, won the 88th California State Fair Championship over Labor Day weekend, putting together a 54-hole total of 200, 16-under par. Hagy got the ball rolling early in the tournament as he took a share of the lead after the first round firing a seven-under par 65. Hagy then followed that up with rounds of 68 and 67 to win by one stroke over Max Homa.
Homa, who finished alone in second at 201, 15-under par, followed his opening round of 69 with consecutive 66s to compete for the top spot. In third was Michael Kim, who after a pedestrian 72 in the first round, fired an eight-under 64 in the second round—the low round of the tournament—to put himself in contention in Monday’s final round. Kim matched Homa’s 66 on Sunday, which put him at 202, 14-under par for the tournament. In fourth place was Jay Hwang at 205, 11-under par, while Alex Edfort finished fifth at 206, 10-under par. Hwang and Edfort were two of four players—the other two being Hagy and Homa–to shoot three rounds in the 60s: 67-69-69 (Hwang) 68-69-69 (Edfort).
Defending champion Matt Hansen tied for sixth with Elk Grove’s Grant Rappleye as the two NCGA members finished with scores of 207, nine-under par. Hansen had a share of the first round lead after an opening round 65, but faded the final two rounds with back-to-back rounds of 71. Rappleye was in solid position after two rounds with back-to-back 68s, but a final round 71 wasn’t enough for a top five finish. Rounding out the top 10 are Walker Huddy, Nicholas Thomas and Vincent Venard, who each posted 54 hole scores of 208 to tie for eighth place.
