SANTA ROSA – James Duncan of Sonoma and Ray Kong of San Jose led all scores at CGA Senior Amateur Qualifying, Monday, as the two competitors each fired rounds of one-over 73, respectively. Duncan, the first to post, found himself a couple over par quickly as he bogeyed three of the first five holes to go along with a birdie. However, birdies on Nos. 8, 12 and 14, put him briefly in the red, before taking back-to-back bogeys on the final two holes to finish at 73. Kong, who finished about 30 minutes after Duncan, sandwiched two birdies making one on the third and the other on the 13th, while taking bogeys on Nos. 4, 8 and 12, en route to his 73.
Finishing in a tie for third were Tom Lyons, Greg O’Malley and Eric Smith at two-over par 74, while Les Mitsouka, Mike Parnow and Ralph Costanzo tied for sixth at three-over par 75. Comprising of the last six qualifying spots in a tie for ninth at four-over 76 were Frank Pieper, Robert Miller, Joe Zanassi, Neal Pearson, James Williams, Jay Guerin and Donel Geisen.
No playoff was needed as 15 players finished at 76 or better. The top 15 spots earned a spot for the 21st Annual CGA Senior Amateur Championship at Del Rio GCC November 12-14, 2012.
