EL MACERO – Tony McBroom of Stockton led all scores at CGA Senior Amateur Qualifying at El Macero CC, Monday. McBroom fired a two-over par 74, two shots better than his nearest competitors. The 56-year-old started off the back nine and would make 12 straight pars until taking a bogey on the par-4 fourth hole. Another bogey on the par-4 sixth dropped him to two-over, but that would be enough to take top honors, despite a birdie-less round.
Finishing in a tie for second at four-over par 76 were Craig Gandy of Roseville and Gregory Zipp of San Francisco. In a five-way tie for fourth place were Bob Rowland, Tim Grunsky, Gary Ramsden, Rich Gleghorn and Scott Anderson. All five players each shot a score five-over par 77, which was good enough to qualify outright and avoid a playoff. However, six players came in at six-over par 78 with only four spots available, forcing a sudden-death playoff. In the end Tim Dougherty, Ken Webb, Charles Richesin and Dan Bohannon survived, while Mark Otto and Ron Truhett were relegated to first and second alternate, respectively. Earning third alternate was Ben Whipple.
The CGA Senior Championship will take place November 12-14 at Del Rio CC in Modesto.
