MARYSVILLE – U.S. Senior Amateur Qualifying took place Monday at Peach Tree GCC in Marysville and saw some competitive golf including a six-man playoff for the final three qualifying spots. Dennis Younglove of Davis was the only qualifying player safe from the playoff as the 64-year-old fired a three-under par 69, four shots better than his nearest competitors. Younglove, who started off the 10th tee, got off to a quick start with birdies on 10 and 11 before taking a bogey on the 12th. He’d make the turn with a birdie on the 18th, and two more birdies on Nos. 4 and 6 would get him to four-under, before finishing with a bogey on the ninth hole.
George Kelley, Gary Vanier, Peter Moren, Jon Cook, Stan Lefrak and Frank Pieper all finished tied for second as each player posted rounds of one-over par 73. The six players had to compete for the final three qualifying spots in a sudden-death playoff with Kelley, Vanier and Moren prevailing. Danville’s Moren and Kelley of Stevinson were the first to advance after the first playoff hole, while Vanier of Pleasant Hill advanced after the second playoff beating Folsom’s Lefrak. Lefrak earned first alternate, while Cook of Burlingame is slotted as second alternate.
The four qualifying players will move on to the U.S. Senior Amateur Championship at Mountain Ridge CC in West Caldwell, New Jersey, September 29-October 4, 2012.
