El Macero CC
July 9-10, 2012
EL MACERO – The Junior Tour of Northern California has made it through the halfway point of its 2012 tournament season as players endured a couple of sweltering hot days at El Macero CC. Despite being halfway through the season the JTNC saw plenty of new faces as the tournament welcomed seven first time junior tour participants and celebrated four new champions.
The girls championship flight needed a sudden-death playoff to determine its champion after both Monica Chen of Fremont and Natalie Bodnar of Pleasanton posted 36-hole scores of 158. Bodnar ended it early as she birdied the first playoff hole, the par-5 fifth, to earn first place honors. The Pleasanton resident shot back-to-back rounds of 79, while Chen posted rounds of 78 and 80. Finishing alone in third was Natalie Park of Dublin. She posted rounds of 79 and 86 to finish the tournament at 165.
Sean Duckering of Clovis led the boys championship flight with some stellar play finishing with a 36-hole score of 143, 1-under par. Duckering’s play was six shots better than nearest competitors Wyatt Amral and Nicklaus Tiger Rivera who finished at 149, 5-over par. Duckering, who started the final round with a one-stroke lead, got off to a nice start by birdieing the par-5 second hole. Bogeys on holes six and 14 would set him back only a little as he would go on to make an eagle-3 on the par-5 15th to get to 1-under for the day. Amral of Fairfield, earned second place honors via a scorecard playoff. His rounds of 73 and 76 included five birdies and 10 bogeys over 36 holes of play. Rivera of Redding stormed up the leaderboard on Tuesday as he followed his first round 77 with an even-par 72. His final round impressively included five birdies.
Rashad Jaymes of Foster City broke through in the boys first flight with his first win of the season. Jaymes has finished third place in two previous events this year, but finally earned a gold medal for his efforts at El Macero. Jaymes posted a 36-hole score of 149 after solid rounds of 75 and 74. Brendan Hy earned second place with two-day total of 155. The San Ramon resident’s rounds of 77 and 78 marks his second top three placing this year. Amitesh Kataria of Berkley took third place posting a 36-hole score of 156. Kataria surpassed several golfers on Tuesday as he followed his first round score of 80 with a 76.
Grace Chen of Sunnyvale finished atop the leaderboard in the girls first flight. Chen shot a 36-hole score of 168, with rounds of 87 and 81. She held a two-shot lead over Beah Cruz of Rancho Murieta after 18 holes and finished 36 holes over Cruz by the same margin. Cruz earned second place honors by shooting rounds of 89 and 81 to finish at 170. Kenness Cheung of Alameda finished alone in third with a 36-hole score of 179, which consisted of rounds of 90 and 89.
