U.S. Mid-Amateur Qualifying
San Joaquin CC
July 30, 2012
FRESNO – Jason Higton of Fresno took advantage of his home course knowledge as he fired a two-under par 69 to take medalist honors for U.S. Mid-Amateur Qualifying at San Joaquin CC. The 32-year-old recovered nicely after taking two double-bogeys on his opening four holes. With birdies on holes three, five, 14 and 18 to go along with an eagle par-5 12th, the 2011 NCGA Four-Ball champion was able to post just one of two red numbers on the day.
The other red number, which was also good for a qualifying spot went to Kevin Wolf of Lodi. Unlike Higton’s round, Wolf opened up with a birdie on the par-4 first hole and would add birdies on Nos. 5 and 17. Wolf’s two mistakes came on the fourth and sixth holes where he took bogeys. Still his play was good enough to card a one-under par 70 to earn one of two spots.
Just missing out on qualifying was Salinas resident Ricky Stockton, who finished alone in third at even-par 71. Stockton was one-under par most of his round but dropped a shot on the par-4 15th with a bogey. With his finish, the 26-year-old earned first alternate respectively. Earning second alternate via a sudden-death playoff was Ryan Higton of Fresno, who beat out Brian Jones and Rob Adolph after the first playoff hole. All three players finished 18 holes of qualifying at 1-over par 72.
The next stop for (Jason) Higton and Wolf will be Conway Farms GC in Lake Forest, Ill. September 8-13 for the U.S. Mid-Amateur Championship.
