PLEASANT HILL – Hunter Rappleye of Elk Grove held on to share medalist honors for the U.S. Amateur qualifier at Contra Costa CC and earn one of three spots awarded at the par-71 golf course. The 17-year-old fired a 2-under par 69 in the morning to take a one-stroke lead over fellow 17-year-old Nicolo Galletti of Pleasanton, who posted a 1-under 70. However, Galletti bested Rappleye in the afternoon shooting a 1-over 72 compared to Rappleye’s 2-over 73. The two teenagers found themselves tied atop the leaderboard at even-par 142 to each earn one of three spots.
The third and final spot went to Jason Anthony of Fairfield, who finished alone in third at 143, 1-over par. Anthony opened his day with an 18-hole score of 1-over 72, which was good enough to be in a tie for fifth. However, as players tired in the afternoon 18-hole round, Anthony posted the best afternoon score of anyone, shooting an even-par 71.
Matthew Miller of Pleasanton earned first alternate after posting a two-round total of 145. Miller opened up with an even-par 71, but closed with a 3-over par 74, which put him alone in fourth place. Coming in at a tie for fifth were Bobby Bucey of Concord and Ryan Han of Hollister, who finished at 146. With both players leaving before all scores came in, Bucey earned the second alternate by coin flip instead of a traditional sudden-death playoff.
Rappleye, Galletti and Anthony will move on to play in the U.S. Amateur Championship at Cherry Hills CC in Cherry Hills Village, Colo., August 13-19.
