Butte Creek GCC

CHICO – Jon Peterson of Granite Bay beat out several tough young golfers, some half his age, to earn a spot in next month’s U.S. Amateur. The 39-year-old fired rounds of 71 and 67 at Butte Creek GCC to finish at 138 and take a one-stroke victory. Peterson’s second 18-hole round was some spectacular golf as he made six birdies and one bogey to jump ahead the rest of the field.
The second and only other available spot went to Eric Frazetta of Long Beach, who beat two-time NCGA Amateur Match Play Champion John Catlin after three holes in a sudden-death playoff. The two players finished 36 holes at 139, 5-under par. Frazetta fired rounds of 70 and 69, while Catlin posted scores of 71 and 68. Unless Catlin gets into the U.S. Amateur with his first alternate spot, Catlin will try to go for a three-peat in the NCGA Amateur Match Play Championship, which will be held the same week as the U.S. Amateur.
Peterson and Frazetta will next move on to Cherry Hills Village, Colo. for the U.S. Amateur Championship at Cherry Hills CC, August 13-19.
