U.S. Senior Open Qualifying
Green Valley CC
June 25, 2012
FAIRFIELD – Robert Fulton of Walnut Creek and Dale Bouguennec of Pleasant Hill earned the two spots available at Green Valley CC’s U.S. Senior Open Qualifying with scores of 70 and 72, respectively. Fulton looked invincible over his first 16 holes of play as he made five birdies and 11 pars. Starting off the 10th tee, Fulton made birdie right out of the gate on the 10th and added another on the 13th. After converting birdies on holes one, two and seven, it didn’t matter that Fulton would wind up doubling the eighth and bogeying the ninth as his final tally of 70, 2-under par, was two strokes clear of the nearest competition.
Bouguennec, on the other hand, had to fight off three other players—Dan Bieber, Greg Bruckner and Tommy Tominaga—in a playoff to earn his spot as all four players came in at even-par 72. The 52 year-old, who also started off the 10th tee, had two very different front and back-nines. After making one bogey (No. 11) and eight pars to start off his round, Bouguennec got back to even-par with a birdie on the first hole. Back-to-back bogeys on Nos. three and four looked to be Bougennec’s demise, but back-to-back birdies on Nos. seven and eight helped buoy his position up the leaderboard.
Fulton and Bouguennec will next travel to Lake Orion, Michigan to compete in the U.S. Senior Open Championship July 12-15 at Indianwood GCC. Bieber and Tominaga earned first and second alternate positions, respectively.
