SAN JOSE – Carlos Briones posted a 1-under 54-hole score of 209 to win the 86th Annual Ernie Pieper Santa Clara County Championship at San Jose CC. Briones beat 2011 champion and San Jose CC member Jay Myers and 19 year-old Justin Suh by one stroke to take the title, as both players posted even-par three-round scores of 210. Finishing in fourth place was Portola Valley’s Robby Salomon at 3-over, 213 and alone in fifth was Scott Lowe at 4-over 214. All players that finished in the top five are under the age of 24.
In the senior division Gary Vanier won his first tournament of the 2012 points’ season as he finished with a 36-hole total of 142. He beat out 2011 NCGA Senior Player of the Year and current senior points’ leader Jim Knoll, who posted a two-round score of 146. Tying for third were Carmichael’s Herb Jensen and Terry Foreman of Antioch at 149. In a tie for fifth were Peter Moren of Danville and Carmel’s Frank Pieper at 152. Defending senior division champion Casey Boyns didn’t compete.
