La Rinconada CC
May 14, 2012
LOS GATOS – Taylor Knoll led all scores at La Rinconada CC with a 4-under par 66 to qualify for the 101st California State Amateur June 25-30 at La Cumbre CC in Santa Barbara. Knoll posted the only under par score Monday as he converted five birdies and bogey in his 18-hole round. The El Dorado Hills resident, who started off the 10th tee, made birdies on holes 12 and 17 to make the turn 2-under and continued that momentum with a birdie on the first. However, a minor setback with a bogey-5 on the third hole didn’t discourage the 18 year-old as he finished his round off with birdies on Nos. seven and nine.
Finishing alone in second was Palo Alto resident Patrick Grimes, who posted an even-par 70. Grimes round was anything but 18 straight pars as he made four birdies and four bogeys on the day. Coming in at a tie for third place were Matthew Seramin and Donald Maroney, posting scores of 1-over 71. Seramin of San Geronimo played steady with 15 pars, two bogeys and one birdie in his round. Not far different Livermore’s Maroney had 13 pars, three bogeys and two birdies in his round.
The last two players to qualify were Tommy Economou of Hillsborough and Belmont’s Andrew Biggadike. Both players finished at 2-over par 72 along with Marcel Puyat of Indio. With only two spots for the three players a sudden-death playoff was needed, with Economou and Biggadike advancing after the first hole. Despite losing in the playoff Puyat automatically earned first alternate spot, while three other players had to playoff for second alternate. Carter Pool, Andrew Walters and Craig Kilcoyne battled it out for three playoff holes, with Walters of San Leandro earning the spot.
