ROSEVILLE – What’s better than one eagle? Two eagles. Josh Baskins of Redding converted two eagles in his round of 7-under 65 at Sierra View CC Monday. The 21 year-old started his round off of 10th hole and opened with an eagle 3. After two more birdies on 14 and 18, Baskins opened his second nine with another eagle 3 to get to 6-under par through 10 holes. He came back down to earth two holes later on the third hole with a bogey, but closed out his round with birdies on Nos. four and six.
Baskins was five shots better than second place finisher Tyler Leeworthy, who also saw plenty of red on his card. The Galt resident had six birdies in his round, but also four bogeys to finish at 2-under 70. Dennis Dachtler and Kevin Ponath finished in a tie for third place at 1-under 71. Datchler had four bogeys in his round, including three consecutive over holes eight, nine and 10. However, he overcame those mistakes with three birdies and an eagle in his round. After opening the day with a bogey 6, Ponath converted three birdies and one more bogey for his round of 71. Finishing in a tie for fifth at even-par 72 were Jeff Hoffman, Paul Smith and Joshua Stone. Hoffman had a solid round going as he had three birdies and one bogey until the 18th hole where he finished off with a double-bogey 7. Stone had a very similar scorecard to Hoffman with three birdies, a bogey and a double-bogey, while Smith had two birdies and two bogeys on his day.
The last three competitors to qualify for the 101st California State Amateur, June 25-30, at La Cumbre CC in Santa Barbara were Blake Abercrombie, Ricky Owaki and Zachary Solomon. The trio finished at 1-over 73 and each had to beat out Cole Fisher and Wes Sandroni for the final three spots. The three earned their respective spots after the first playoff hole, while Sandroni earned first alternate over Fisher after an additional playoff hole.
