CGA Amateur Championship Qualifying
Santa Rosa GCC
April 30, 2012
SANTA ROSA – Eric Ash of Loomis and Santa Rosa’s Alex Reno both posted impressive 5-under 67s on Monday to take top honors at the CGA qualifier at Santa Rosa GCC. Ash got off to an interesting start in his round as he didn’t record his first par until the sixth hole. The 18 year-old started off with three straight birdies, a bogey on the fourth and another birdie on the fifth. Ash dropped to 2-under after a bogey 6 on the 11th hole, but finished his round strong with birdies on 13, 14 and 16. Reno, who started off No. 10, had four birdies in his first nine holes (Nos. 12, 14, 16 and 18) and a bogey (No. 15). On his back nine, the 20 year-old scored back-to-back birdies on holes five and six, to finish the round at 5-under par.
Besides Ash and Reno four other players qualified Monday: Brandon Gama, Shane Lebow, Mark Mance and Kord Tagley. All four players shot 3-under 69s to earn a spot for the 101st California State Amateur Championship, June 25-30, at La Cumbre CC in Santa Barbara. Gama, a Santa Barbara resident, got there with five birdies and two bogeys in his round. Lebow, also of Santa Barbara was bolstered by an eagle 3 on the second hole. San Francisco’s Mance had five birdies and two bogeys on his round, while Tagley had a bogey-free round scoring three birdies and 15 pars.
The seven scores of 3-under or better worked out perfectly for the seven spots handed out Monday. Unfortunately, scores of 1-under par by Napa’s Greg Edwards and Steven Warne of Santa Rosa weren’t good enough for a qualifying spot.
