SAN FRANCISCO – After the first round of match play at the San Francisco City Senior, 4 of the top 5 seeds have been eliminated. Defending champion Mark Miller of Antioch and qualifying medalist Dan Bieber of Alamo both lost their matches Thursday. San Mateo’s Tony Wilmer defeated the top-seeded Miller 1 up, while Carmichael’s Herb Jensen beat No. 2-seeded Bieber 2 and 1.
The highest seed remaining is No. 4 seed Doug Johnson of Fresno, who beat Carmel’s Frank Pieper 3 and 2. Also going down Thursday were No. 3 seed Ken Noonan of Pleasanton to Mountain View’s Gene Van Puymbroeck, and No. 5 seed Bill Bates of Somerset losing to Nevada City’s Gary Vanier at an unusually low seed (No. 28).
Despite several top-seeded players exiting early the championship has shown tremendous parity thus far as eight higher seeds and eight lower seeds advanced. The round of 16 and the quarterfinals will take place next week on February 29 and March 1.
