Salinas Fairways GC
March 17-18, 24-25, 2012
SALINAS – Salinas resident Ricky Stockton won the Salinas City Match Play held over the third and fourth weekends of March at Salinas Fairways GC. Stockton beat fellow Salinas resident Matt Ogden 2 and 1 in the 18-hole final. His victory came after a grueling 24-hole match with Hollister’s Will Cross in the semifinals. Stockton’s other matches weren’t as demanding as his last two as he beat Scott Morris 4 and 2 in the quarterfinals, Marcos Solis 6 and 5 in the round of 16 and Andrew Loftus 4 and 3 in the opening round. Ogden, on the other hand, had more work to do to get to the final. After cruising to a first round victory 6 and 5 over Eric Hanson, his next three matches went a total of 53 holes. The only match that didn’t go the full 18 was his semifinal match against qualifying co-medalist Kraig McLeod, with Ogden winning 2 and 1. Carmel’s Jerry Ledzinski was the other co-medalist and he was ousted in the first round by Jack Tarideu in 21 holes.
In the senior division a small field of 13 competed with qualifying nixed. Jim Knoll of Sunnyvale won his third title of the 2012 season. Knoll beat Santa Cruz’s Neil Duffy 4 & 3 in the final. Knoll also beat Antioch’s Mark Miller 2 & 1 in the semifinals, who recently claimed the top spot in the Senior Player of the Race and Tom O’Grady in the quarterfinals.
