FRESNO – Danny Paniccia of Clovis won his first individual event of the 2012 NCGA points season at the 85th Fresno City Amateur Championship with a 54-hole score of 205, 11-under par. The 200-point win vaulted the Clovis resident into the top 10 of the NCGA Player of the Year race as he currently sits in seventh place. Paniccia beat out fellow San Joaquin Valley natives Bryson DeChambeau and Michael Weaver, who finished four shots back at 209, 7-under par. After an opening round of 2-under par 70 and one stroke behind first round leaders Michael Tolladay and Nathan Jessup, Paniccia fired a 6-under 66 in the second round to take a three shot lead going into the final round. The final round proved to be another solid day of golf as Paniccia posted a 3-under 69 to take the title.
DeChambeau’s rounds were extremely consistent as he opened with back-to-back 70s and finished with a final round 3-under par 69. Weaver’s opening round of even-par 72 proved to be difficult to contend for the top spot, despite shooting under par rounds of 5-under 67 and 2-under 70. Paul Smith of Turlock finished alone in fourth with a three-day total of 4-under par 212, while Fresno’s Michael Tolladay finished solo fifth at 2-under par 214.
