Stanford’s Rodgers, Wilson Get Sponsor Exemptions Into Frys.com Open

June 4, 2014

Cardinal golf stars Patrick Rodgers and Cameron Wilson have accepted sponsor exemptions to play in the Frys.com Open, a PGA TOUR event Oct. 6-12 at Silverado Resort and Spa in Napa, according to Tournament Director Jeff Sanchez.

In three seasons at Stanford, Rodgers won 12 tournaments, tying the school record set by Tiger Woods from 1994-1996. The junior from Avon, Ind., recently received both the Ben Hogan and Jack Nicklaus awards that go to the collegiate player of the year.

Wilson, a left-hander from Rowayton, Conn., won the NCAA Individual title last week at Prairie Dunes Golf Club in Hutchinson, Kansas. He will make his professional debut in The Travelers Championship, a PGA TOUR event later this month in his home state of Connecticut. A four-year standout at Stanford, Wilson was an all-Pac-10 Conference selection as a senior.

“Our exemptions have performed well in our tournament in recent years, as six have finished in the top 10 in each of the past five years,” Sanchez said. “We believe that Patrick and Cameron will continue that trend.”

Awarded sponsor exemptions to last year’s Frys.com Open, Brooks Koepka led after 54 holes, ultimately finishing tied for third, while Max Homa finished tied for ninth.

Rodgers and Wilson completed their careers at Stanford last week at the NCAA Championships. Both also have been invited to play in the John Deere Classic in mid-July.

The two will join Rory McIlroy, who earlier committed to the tournament.  The Fry’s field could have some other big names, too, including Tiger Woods (if he’s healthy) and 2012 U.S. Open winner Webb Simpson. The reason? Back in 2012, McIlroy, Woods, Simpson and five others were granted a release from the PGA Tour schedule to play in the Turkish Airlines World Golf Final. According to Frys.com Open tournament director Jeff Sanchez, they all are obligated to play in the Fry’s at least once between 2013 and 2015. None of those players participated in last year’s Fry’s.
