Sam Snead’s favorite golf course, located in Northern California wine country, has a new owner.

The historic Sonoma Golf Club in Sonoma was recently acquired by boutique owner/ golf club operator Escalante Golf from Crescent Real Estate.

Escalante Golf, based in Texas, owns a number of exclusive clubs in key markets including The Golf Club at Dove Mountain in Arizona (site of the Accenture WGC World Match Play Championship), Golf Club of Houston in Texas (site of the Shell Houston Open), The Crosby National Golf Club in Rancho Santa Fe and Black Diamond Ranch in Florida.

“Sonoma Golf Club fits perfectly in our portfolio,” said David McDonald, President of Escalante Golf. “We have a wonderful collection of private clubs in a diverse geographic area and Northern California is the perfect location to expand our footprint. We are excited to meet and work together with members to build upon the success of a club with a rich and storied tradition.”

Sonoma Golf Club, conceived during the ‘Golden Age of Golf’ in the1920s, was designed in 1928 by acclaimed architect Sam Whiting, whose other Northern California work includes both the Ocean and Lake Courses at The Olympic Club and TPC Harding Park.  Sonoma Golf Club was originally offered as a prestigious amenity for guests of the Sonoma Mission Inn.

Sonoma Golf Club has hosted some of the most celebrated names in golf including Byron Nelson, Ken Venturi, Tom Watson and Snead.

When asked by former San Francisco Examiner golf writer Art Rosenbaum what his favorite course was, Snead replied, “Sir, it’s a course you probably never heard of. It’s the Sonoma Golf Course.”

Located in the heart of wine country, the venerable design has withstood the test of time and served as host of the season ending Charles Schwab Cup Championship on the Champions Tour.

Jeff Woolson, Managing Director of CBRE’s Golf and Resort Group, who represented Crescent Real Estate in the transaction, said that Escalante was the best choice of potential buyers.

“We interviewed a number of interested buyers, including the members themselves,” Woolson said. “After a lengthy process, Escalante emerged as the best buyer for the property.  Sonoma Golf Club is the perfect complement to its luxury club portfolio.”
