De Los Reyes Cruises at Wine Country Cup

Jan. 28, 2014

ReyesSacramento resident Jonathan De Los Reyes shot an opening round 5-under 67 and never looked back, capturing the Wine Country Cup at StoneTree Golf Club.

A redshirt junior at St. Mary’s, De Los Reyes followed up his opening 67 with a 69 that included 16 greens hit in regulation to defeat runner-up and Gaels teammate Alex Bungert (71-69) of Rancho Santa Margarita by four strokes. In what was a second straight strong showing for St. Mary’s, teammate Cody Robinson (70-73) tied for third with Tim Beranek (72-71) at 143.

Two weeks ago, Gaels sophomore Mac Marr won the Silicon Valley Amateur with Robinson taking second place. As for more of the Gaels’ prowess, in both 2012 and 2013 Ben Geyer won NCGA Player of the Year honors. There’s also Gaels head coach Scott Hardy, who has his own impressive NCGA resume, including a pair of Amateur Stroke Play Championship titles (2004, 2011).

In the Senior championship, Mark Miller of Brentwood shot 149 (79-70) to come from behind and defeat runner-up Greg O’Malley (77-75) of Santa Rosa by three strokes. Miller was the 2013 Tour Senior Player of the Year. In Net play, San Anselmo’s Bill Hudson won with a score of 138 (66-72).
