Web.com Tour Back In Bay Area

Web.com Tour’s Stonebrae Classic to Return in 2014

Jan. 17, 2014

Stonebrae-Hole-2Bay Area golf fans have yet another reason to rejoice in 2014.

On Friday, the 2014 Web.com Tour schedule was released and the Stonebrae Classic is back on the calendar.

The tournament, to be held July 31-Aug. 3 at TPC Stonebrae in Hayward, took last year off due to the construction of a new 28,000 foot clubhouse. The TPC Stonebrae course previously hosted the event, which features a $600,000 purse, from 2009 to 2012.

San Francisco Chronicle golf writer Ron Kroichick notes that Cal alums Michael Kim and Max Homa are expected to be in the field.

The return of the Stonebrae Classic gives Bay Area golf fans yet another tournament option to flock to in 2014.

The LPGA Tour comes back April 24-27 with the Swinging Skirts LPGA Classic, to be held at Lake Merced GC in Daly City.  The tournament marks the first LPGA Tour event in the region since 2010.

There’s also the PGA Tour’s season-opening Frys.com Open at Silverado Resort and Spa in Napa (Oct. 6-12), which could receive a jolt due to the possible presence of Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy.

In 2012, Woods, McIlroy and six others, including The Olympic Club U.S. Open winner Web Simpson, played in the Turkish Airlines World Golf Final. According to Frys.com Open tournament director Jeff Sanchez, there’s an agreement that says as part of those players’ release to play in Turkey, they’re obligated to play in the Frys.com Open at least once in 2013, 2014 or 2015. None of those players decided to enter last year’s Frys.com Open.

“We like the Frys at Silverado. We get Tiger, Rory and (Lee) Westwood and (Charl) Schwartzel,” said Johnny Miller, who owns Silverado.
