Junior Tour of Northern California Fall Series V
Diablo Grande Resort
September 28-29, 2013
The Junior Tour of Northern California continued its 2013 Fall Series with its fifth event in the previous seven weeks with a visit to Diablo Grande Resort in Patterson, Calif. Players from the four different flights competed on the Ranch Course with three of the flights resulting in multiple-stroke victories, while the other provided an exciting sudden-death playoff.
The largest margin of victory this week surprisingly came in the boys championship flight as Alexander Lee dominated his way to a seven-stroke victory. Nobody could compete with Lee’s outstanding 36-hole score of 136, 8-under-par, which included back-to-back rounds in the 60s. The Sacramento resident opened with a 5-under-par 67 on Saturday, which included eight birdies, one bogey and one double bogey, before closing with a 3-under-par 69 on Sunday. Finishing tied for second at 143, 1-under-par were Will Bednarz of Larkspur and Matt Kadiu of Cupertino. Bednarz made his way to a 36-hole score of 143 with rounds of 75 and 68, while Kadiu posted rounds of 73 and 70. With his outstanding play in Sunday’s final round—the low round of the day—Bednarz won a scorecard playoff to take home the second place medal, while Kadiu was awarded the third place medal.
The boys first flight provided an exciting sudden-death playoff, which occurred after Brian Ma of Milipitas and Aditya Kumar of Fremont both posted 36-hole scores of 150, 6-over-par. After both players halved the first playoff hole with pars, Ma made a birdie putt to end it and take home the first place medal. Ma, who captured a share first-round lead after opening with a 74, fell back a couple shots on Sunday with a 76, while Kumar did the opposite, having started the day tied for third after a 76 before finishing with a 74. Finishing alone in third place with matching rounds of 76 for a 152, 8-over-par total was Jin Kim of San Jose.
Kathleen Scavo seized her victory in the girls championship flight with a bogey-free effort in Sunday’s final round to win by four strokes. The Benicia resident started the final round in a three-way tie for second place after opening with a 3-over-par 74 (par-71 for girls’ flights) and then closed with a 1-under-par 70 for a 144, 2-over-par 36-hole total. Scavo’s final round scorecard might not be the most exciting to look at with 17 pars and one birdie, but that consistency earned her top prize among all competing girls. Finishing in second place and coming up short of a third victory in the JTNC Fall Series was Sabrina Iqbal at 148, 7-over-par. Iqbal of San Jose was tied with Scavo after the first round with a 74 and was unable to improve on that posting a second 74 on Sunday. Third place went to first-round leader Jessica Fore of Marina who finished at 149 after following up her first-round 73 with a final-round 76.
In the girls first flight, Ashley Pan won her second tournament of the Fall Series with a three-shot victory at Diablo Grande Resort. Pan posted a 36-hole total of 152, 10-over-par with rounds of 80 and 72. The Moraga resident put up a solid performance in her final round, which included three birdies and four bogeys. Taking second place at 155, 13-over-par was Jessica Jeong of Dublin who had rounds of 80 and 75. Finishing in third place at 156, 14-over-par was Aishvarya Bedi of San Jose who put together rounds of 79 and 77. First-round leader Sophia Stetson of Visalia fell from first to fourth posting an 82 after a first-round 78 to finish with a 160, 36-hole total.
