MONTEREY – Palo Alto GC went wire to wire to win the NCGA San Francisco Zone Championship, scoring a 36-hole score of 252, 34-under-par in a format which takes the two best net scores per hole of a four-man team. After opening with an 18-under-par score of 124 at Quail Lodge GC on Monday, Palo Alto followed that with a 16-under-par score of 128 at Del Monte GC. The four-man team featuring Keith Arends, James Breedlove, John Frykland and James Schenkel scored two net double eagles, three net eagles, seven net birdies, a net bogey and a net double bogey to nearly match yesterday’s mark.
Two teams tied for second at 260, 26-under-par forcing a playoff for the second qualifying spot. In the end the Lincoln Park GC team beat Mill Valley GC after the first playoff hole to advance. The Lincoln Park GC team of Richard Angerman, Kenneth Harrington, Marc Maisano and Tom Weathered moved up the leaderboard from a tie in third place thanks to a bogey-free round which included three net eagles and seven net birdies. The quartet of golfers showed consistency in their rounds scoring 13-under-par each day, 129 at Quail Lodge GC on Monday and a 131 at Del Monte GC on Tuesday.
With their performances Palo Alto GC and Lincoln Park GC qualify for the 47th Annual NCGA Zone Championship at Spyglass Hill and Del Monte GC on August 26-27.

CARMEL – Palo Alto GC leads after the first round of the NCGA San Francisco Zone Championship, firing a score of 124, 18-under par at Quail Lodge GC. In a format which takes the best two net scores per hole of a four-man team, Keith Arends, James Breedlove, John Frykland and James Schenkel teamed up for six net eagles, seven net birdies and one net bogey.
Currently in second place and in position for the second qualifying spot is Shoreline GC at 127, 15-under par. Norman Akita, Bill Ball, Richard Dalton and Pete Pizzino scored a net double eagle, four net eagles and six net birdies to go along with two net bogeys.
Tied for third place at 129, 13-under par are Half Moon Bay GC and Lincoln Park GC. Four teams are bunched up in a tie for fifth at 130, 12-under par: Los Altos GCC, Mill Valley GC, Menlo CC and Olympic Club. Rounding out the top 10 in a tie for ninth at 132, 10-under par are Crystal Springs GC and Palo Altos Hills GCC.
Tomorrow’s final round will conclude at Del Monte GC. The top two teams will advance to the overall zone championship at Spyglass Hill GC and Del Monte GC on August 26-27.
