Shadow Lakes GC –  Final Round Results | Pairings

Boys Championship Flight: Joshua McCarthy (champion), Justin Suh (runner-up) and Eddie Lai (third place).

Plenty of red numbers could be found at Deer Ridge/Shadow Lakes GC in Brentwood over the weekend for Spring Series IV. The four champions from the four different flights included one 2013 repeat winner (Joshua McCarthy) and three first time winners in 2013 (Grant Leppek, Amanjoty Sangha and Rose Friedman).

McCarthy, who won Spring Series I to open up 2013 with a victory, claimed his second victory in the boys championship flight firing a two-day total of 139, three-under par. The Danville resident had rounds of 68 and 71 to take a one-shot victory. Despite shooting a stellar round of 68 on the first day, McCarthy was outdone by four other players in the first round as he found himself alone in fifth with three players having shot a four-under round of 67 and another posting a six-under 65. Justin Suh of San Jose was one of the three players at four-under after the first round. Suh came up just short of a playoff with McCarthy as he posted a 73 in the final round to finish at 140 and earn second place. Taking home the third place medal was Eddie Lai of San Jose at 141, one-under par. Lai tied with Austin Lin of Cupertino, but was awarded the third place medal via a scorecard playoff. Lai’s rounds included a 70 and 71, while Lin had rounds of 72 and 69, which was the lowest score in the final round. Ryan Maund of Pleasanton the first round leader, who fired an impressive 65 on Saturday, struggled in the final round with a 79.

Boys First Flight: Grant Leppek (champion), Hayden Hui (runner-up) and Ryan Vaughan (third place).

The boys first flight also had some red numbers on its leaderboard, all of them coming from champion Leppek. The Rocklin resident ran away from his competition as he won by a margin of seven strokes. Leppek fired a first round of four-under par 67, a day which included five birdies and one bogey. In the final round, he was able to shoot a three-over par 74 to finish with a 36-hole score in red numbers at one-under par 141. Hayden Hui, a previous winner in the boys first flight this year, played well enough to earn second place. His 36-hole score of 148 included a first round 75 and a final round 73, the lowest among his flight on Sunday. In third place was Ryan Vaughan, another previous first flight winner in 2013, with a score of 152. The San Jose resident’s rounds consisted of a 74 and 78.

Girls Championship Flight: Katherine Zhu (runner-up) and Amanjoty Sangha (champion). Not pictured: Sara Scarlett (third place).

Sangha of San Mateo won the girls championship flight rather comfortably by a three-stroke margin. With a crowded leaderboard up top after the first round, Sangha separated herself from top competition in the final round. While other competitors struggled toward higher scores in the final round, she played steady, following her first round 73 with a final round 72 to finish at 145, three-over par. Katherine Zhu of San Jose earned her second runner-up finish of 2013 with a 148 total, firing rounds of 73 and 75. Three girls finished tied for third at 149, Sara Scarlett, Sabrina Iqbal and Maria Davis. Scarlett of Woodland was awarded the third place medal via a scorecard playoff as she had a solid final round of 74 following her first round 75. Iqbal had rounds of 72 and 77, while Davis (the first round leader) had rounds of 69 and 80.

Girls First Flight: Rose Friedman (champion), Victoria Hoff (runner-up) and Emily Rotter (third place).

In the girls first flight, Friedman of Corte Madera won with a 36-hole score of 157, in what was a very competitive flight. After a first round of 79 in a tie for third and one-shot off the lead, Friedman played the final round one stroke better (78), which was all she needed to claim top prize. Victoria Hoff, a first round co-leader, finished alone in second with a score of 158. Hoff played slightly worse in the final round to fall out of top position, following her first round 78 with an 80. In third place was Spring Series II winner Emily Rotter, who posted rounds of 79 and 83 for a 162 total.
