The Junior Tour of Northern California, sponsored by Capital Insurance Group (CIG), opened 2013 tournament play with over 200 juniors participating at Stockton GCC and Elkhorn GC, the largest field of the year. The boys championship flight commanded nearly a full field with players competing the first day at Elkhorn GC and the second day at Stockton GCC, while the boys first flight, girls championship and first flight started their competition at Stockton GCC and finished at Elkhorn GC. The four champions of the four flights were Joshua McCarthy (boys championship), Grace Park (girls championship), Hayden Hui (boys first) and Taylor Robles (girls first).

The boys championship flight, which had 96 players participating, saw an exciting finish as two players squared off in a sudden death playoff at Stockton GCC. Hayden Shieh of Fremont and McCarthy of Danville both finished 36 holes at 148, with all the momentum looking to be going Shieh’s way. The Fremont resident had mounted a comeback with the low score on Sunday, a one-over par 72, while McCarthy struggled to a six-over par score of 77. However, on the first playoff hole much of that momentum was lost when Shieh hit his drive into a fairway bunker with a difficult lie, while McCarthy’s ball lay in the middle of fairway. Despite the degree of difficulty with his approach shot, Shieh was able to get the ball on the green 25-feet from the hole. With the pressure now turned toward McCarthy after Shieh’s miraculous shot, the Danville resident calmly knocked his approach shot 2 ½ feet from the flag. The dramatics didn’t end there however as Shieh’s 25-foot birdie putt horseshoed around the hole, before McCarthy was able to sink his birdie and win the title. Three other players just missed out on the playoff, Corey Eddings, Justin Suh and Dimitri Salido, finishing with a 36-hole score of 149. After a scorecard playoff Eddings was awarded the third place medal.

Girls Championship Flight: Grace Park (champion), Jessica Luo (runner-up) and Emilee Hoffman (third place).

In the girls championship flight, Grace Park of San Jose edged out fellow San Jose resident Jessica Luo by a single stroke. Park, who started Sunday’s final round near the middle of the pack, after opening with an 83, surged to the top of leaderboard with a final round 74 to finish at 157. Luo also saw improvement between the first and second day to place in the top three as she fired rounds of 81 and 77 for a 158 total. Finishing in a three-way tie for third place at 159 were Folsom’s Emilee Hoffman, Mabel Wong of Oakdale and Chloe Corriveau of Pebble Beach. Hoffman took home the third place medal determined by a scorecard playoff.

Boys First Flight: Hayden Hui (champion), Aaron Chen (runner-up) and Drake Mendenhall (third place).

Earning a three-stroke victory in the boys first flight was Hayden Hui of Dublin, who fired a two-day total of 154. Hui proved to be consistent in his play as he was the only player in the boys first flight to post rounds in the 70s on both days (76-78). Taking second place with a score of 157 was Aaron Chen of Fremont. Chen’s final round of 74 at Elkhorn GC was nine shots better than his first round score of 83 at Stockton GCC. A scorecard playoff was also needed in the boys first flight to break a tie as three players finished at 158: Drake Mendenhall, Dylan Menante and Andrew Wong. Mendenhall of Granite Bay was the winner of the scorecard playoff thanks to a stellar one-over par 36 over his final nine holes.

Girls First Flight: Taylor Robles (champion). Not pictured: Ashley Pan (runner-up) and Sophia Hui (third place).

In the girls first flight Taylor Robles of Livermore eked out a one-stroke victory finishing with a 173. Robles, who played lights out the first day with a round of 82 to take a four-shot advantage, struggled a bit more on Sunday, finishing with a 91. However, her two-day total was enough for a gold medal as she beat out Moraga’s Ashley Pan at 174. Pan closed nicely with a final round of 84 after her first round 90 to get in medal position. Still, the best final round of the girls first flight went to third place finisher Sophia Hui of Dublin. Hui finished with a final round of 83, 10 shots better than her first round of 93 to finish at 176.
