PEBBLE BEACH – The Los Amigos GC team featuring Candido Martinez, Jorge Perez, Nick Robles and Dennis Shean went wire to wire to win the 30th Annual NCGA Associate Club Championship. The four-man team followed yesterday’s net score of 15-under par 129 at Spyglass Hill, with a net score of 13-under par 131 at Poppy Hills to finish at a 36-hole total of 28-under par 260.
“We ham and egged it really well,” said Martinez, the elder statesman of the team at 72 years of age.
In a format which takes the two best net scores per hole from a four-man team, Los Amigos GC proved that statement to be true as none of the four players on the team played to their handicap over the two days of competition. The lowest 18-hole net score of the four players was 62-year-old Shean, who shot a net 73 on Monday at Spyglass Hill.
“If there weren’t four of us, we wouldn’t have stood a chance,” said the 42-year-old Robles, the youngest member of the team.
Differing from Monday’s round when Los Amigos made four net eagles and a net a double eagle to go low, the four-man team converted only two net eagles on the day, but made 10 net birdies instead, including six straight from Nos. 2-7.
Going into the final round the four players didn’t worry too much about starting the day with the lead, but were happy just to be out playing golf.
“At the end of yesterday, we were happy with where we were at, and we just went out today and had fun,” said Robles.
Finishing in second place at 263, 25-under par was the team from
Spondulick GC featuring Russell Bettencourt, Russ Birch, John Irish and Shekhar Jain. Starting the day in a three-way tie for second, Spondulick rose above the rest bettering the score of 132 Monday with a 131 on Tuesday. Spondulick had five net eagles, a net double eagle and four net birdies on the day, but were hurt by a net double bogey and two net bogeys.
Earning third place and taking the clubhouse lead for a solid hour before the final two groups came in was the team from Swing Hard GC. The four-man team, which featured Ron Friedland, James Judge, John McCarty and Bill Stjohn, posted the low round of the day with a 16-under par, 128. Swing Hard GC’s round consisted of eight net eagles, four net birdies, two net bogeys and a net double bogey.
The 2013 NCGA Associate Club Championship is scheduled to take place August 26-27 at Del Monte GC and Spyglass Hill GC.

PEBBLE BEACH – The first round of the 30th Annual NCGA Associate Club Championship took place Monday at Spyglass Hill and after 18 holes of play the Los Amigos GC team of Candido Martinez, Jorge Perez, Nick Robles and Dennis Shean have a three-shot lead on the field. The quartet carded a net score of 15-under par, 129 in a format which takes the two best net scores per hole of a four-man team. The team was buoyed by converting six net birdies, four net eagles and a net double-eagle on the No. 1 handicap hole, the par-4 eighth. Despite their spectacular play Monday, Los Amigos didn’t have a flawless round as the team took net bogeys on the 10th and 16th holes.
Not far back from the top of the leaderboard are three teams at a net score of 12-under par, 132.
