STOCKTON – Alameda native Grace Na led all players Thursday posting a 2-under par 70 to qualify for the U.S. Women’s Amateur Public Links Championship in three weeks. The 19 year-old Pepperdine University sophomore played a fairly steady round as she scored four birdies on the day to go along with two bogeys. After making nine pars and two birdies (Nos. three and 10) in her first 11 holes Na dropped down to even par after making back-to-back bogeys on holes 12 and 13; however, she recovered nicely with back-to-back birdies on Nos. 16 and 17 to get back to 2-under. Finishing alone in second was Davis resident Jessica Chulya at 1-under par 71. The 20 year-old sophomore at UC-Davis was much more hot-and-cold in her round as she made five birdies and four bogeys to go along with nine pars. Fellow UC-Davis teammate, freshman Blair Lewis of La Mesa finished solo third after firing an even par 72. Her round consisted of three birdies, one bogey and a double-bogey.
The other four women to qualify included Kelsey Ulep, Hannah Suh, Julie Shutler and Kimberley Johnson. Ulep, Suh and Shutler all finished tied for fourth place after posting 1-over par 73. Ulep of Rocklin and San Jose’s Suh had analogous rounds as both players made two birdies and three bogeys on the day. Manteca resident Shutler made four birdies in her round, but also gave strokes away with three bogeys and a double bogey. San Diego’s Johnson was the last to qualify finishing alone in seventh with a 2-over par 74, which was made up of three bogeys, one birdie and 14 pars.
Missing the cut by two strokes and finishing in a tie for eighth at 4-over 76 were Mabel Wong, Rachel Choi and Clare Sorensen. Sorensen, the 2011 NCGA Junior Girls Champion earned first alternate after the first hole of a sudden-death playoff, while Choi earned second alternate. The seven women who qualified will compete in the U.S. Women’s Amateur Public Links Championship, which will take place June 18-23 at Neshanic Valley GC in Neshanic Station, New Jesrsey.
